Learning Curves
SI 10 turned out to be more of a test piece than a finished artwork. I had underestimated how foreign watercolor and other traditional media had become. This piece was very labor intensive because I had to both remember my prior skill and iterate upon them. I was also scared of messing up the traditional piece, especially since it was watercolor. Water isn't opaque, so there is no changing values once they get too dark.
The process consisted of a lot of prepwork with a very short amount of time actually painting the final piece. I drew many thumbnails, and then drew a rough final sketch. I then took another paper to trace a cleaner final sketch. The rough sketch was then used as a coloring key as well as a guide to trace another sketch if need be.
This illustration was aimed to illustrate the creative breakthroughs and successes in life. So many of my pieces symbolize failure, exhaustion, and trepidation, but not success. Here, we see Morgana successfully cast a spell in her workshop.
