Back to Traditional (Sustained Investigation 10)

A little Bit of Everything

Doing 5 digital illustrations back to back was not a good idea. Not only had it depleted my interest in doing digital art, but I have found my art lacking improvement and direction. There is only so much to learn from one media, no matter how many brushes said media appears to have. I crave a different struggle and want to get back into a few traditional artworks to balance out my recently digital-heavy artwork.

Pop Art and the Negative Space

Starting small, I want to do a watercolor and ink pop art depicting Morgana's cooking magic. It will be loose with a concept-art quality but highly technical and emotional. The reason why I am picking an illustration with negative space is because it will give me the time to focus on the character as well as a few props. I find a background unnecessary in this piece.

The three main artists I will be studying are Karl Kopinski, Hiroshi Yoshida, and Yoji Shinkawa.

Karl Kopinski's ink sketches are both gestural and yet technically accurate and very detailed. However, the heavy use of detail leaves the illustration with nothing but crisp lines, unlike Yoji Shinkawa's drawings. Shinkawa uses the qualities of the brush pen to get dry brushstrokes and more open lines. These artists both have the drawing aesthetic I want, but the black ink is too bold for the tone I am going for. Instead, I will use darker colored inks as shown in the work of Hiroshi Yoshida. I also admire Yoshida's soft yet vibrant colors.
