Bashing and Mashing (Investigation 1|#2)

Investigation Question: How does the relationship with our hobbies change when they become careers?

Photobashing:

In my first real attempt to photobash, I have learned a lot. Going into this experiment, I wanted to extract photo textures into the final product to save time and get quicker details. While I still like having some of the original photo details in the piece, I think I will tone down the photorealism and cover the majority of the photos with my own paint. I realize photobashing is more of a way to get a composition down rather than a way of forming a complete product.

The process of selecting photos can be a bit overwhelming too. While the final sketch of the piece is not required, I will likely need to sketch compositions so my research can narrow down. Looking at beautiful foliage and cafes on Pinterest was as inspiring as it was overwhelming, and my result ended up being, in my opinion, less than the sum of its parts.

Trajectory:

The first SI finished product will hopefully have a polish resembling Ghibli films. I love the stark contrast of linework and painting. It's a beautiful way to outline important characters and items and is a great excuse to put both forms of art in a single piece. I also love the fake cinematic storyboards and "screenshots", and the project will likely take on that finished look.

Because of the simplified looks, characters will require strong shape and color language to make up for their simplicity.
