The Collective Piece
When given the task to make SI 7, 8, and 9 at the same time to emphasize the collection's cohesion, I can't help but think about multi-piece paintings. They are a collection of paintings that are arranged to create a single image. It is, in my opinion, a cheap trick in creating cohesion, since the collection is literally just one piece segmented into smaller artworks, but I feel like I could iterate upon the genre. More importantly, these next three pieces are more challenging than the standard multi-piece painting because of College Board's grading. The collection is not graded at as a whole, but rather individually. In other words, these three sustained investigations must combine into a bigger piece while also being standalone pieces.
How We Choose Our Time
Having three new Sustained Investigations made me think of the three main characters in the story (Morgana, Kiki, and Merlin), so I knew each separate SI would feature one of the three. Despite all having different talents and interests, their shared experiences at the cafe they work at draws them together. I wanted to symbolize this shared struggle with a clock theme. In retrospective, the work artists and students often do would not be as strenuous if not for the unforgiving speed of time. It causes us to weigh the need of sleep against the urgency of a deadline. But no matter what choice one makes, the dilemma is a shared experience that can bring peers together. This collective experience thus brings the multi-piece painting together on one giant clock. Each character displays a different choice in the face of work-heavy nights.
Kiki, and the Choice of Sleep
Kiki, the laziest of the three witches, chooses sleep over work. Her painting is lit by the night, but is unusually vibrant and magical. Origami bunnies of her homework circle her as her dreams mix with the reality in the scene. I want the piece to emphasize that this was a good choice, despite the possibility that she did not finish her work. No matter how backwards it seems, choosing sleep over an all-nighter is the better decision. Resting is not a waste of time, but rather an investment to be faster and more productive after waking up.
