How We Spend Time-- Staying Up Late (Sustained Investigation 8)

Finding Balance

The second piece in this collection is the center of the artwork, featuring Merlin. More diligent than Kiki, he makes the effort to get the work done. However, sleep is also a priority, and eventually he falls asleep. This piece is the midpoint in every visual motif. The origami rabbits in Kiki's dreams turn back into 2d designs on the clock. Homework surrounding Merlin is half finished. The scene is lit by a rising sun, with long stretching shadows and warm orange light, an in-between state of night and day. This piece also stresses that this is a viable option. Being a single image, there is a possibility that he finished his work on time and got sleep.

I think it is also important to note that the clock is also themed as an English bone china plate. The genre of material and style is a common symbol of antique tea ware and "cottagecore" aesthetics. It has also become another symbol of the story, since the story is based around cooking, a cafe/teahouse, and a magical aesthetic. Rabbits are also a symbol in the piece because they are the symbol of the cafe, The Parable Nook. In other words, background elements surrounding the characters are reminders of where they actually are, and where their stress comes from.
