Introduction
Working with a previously established vision that I created last spring, I decided to use the AP sustained investigation unit to bring the world of Morgana to life. This project already had a magic system, aesthetic, and a few character designs which saved me some time. I was also super passionate about the morals that it would represent and wanted to dive into those concepts. While I will be making Morgana into a 2d illustration collection, it is also important to note that the project was initially a video game concept with slightly different focuses (which will probably happen in the future). This version of Morgana is simplified in character dynamics and world exploration, as I only have so much time to represent what AP critiques: ideas and materials.
Topic of Investigation
Through the eyes of Morgana, a young witch with a hand for magical baking, we experience the relationship of an artist and their craft, and how that changes with the question of professionalism. I'm sure many people who experience a love for some hobby or study will eventually be asked if they want to make it into a job. In my experience, accepting the new road to a professional career alters my relations with my passions entirely. Every drawing becomes practice, and must be presentable. There is no more doodling, no drawing in comfort zones. Every piece must contribute to my skill. Essentially, I will never look at drawing the same way I did before. I noticed this juxtaposition when my sister, an excellent baker, decided to covet baking exclusively as a hobby and nothing more. I was at first puzzled why someone would not use their talent to turn a profit, but I now understand the comfort a craft can give when it is only ever a hobby. It is personal, and a way to have fun without restrictions or pressure. In a way, I respect those who love an art form to the point where they will actively not turn it into a career.
In summary, the 5 concepts of my sustained investigation will be: 1) An artist's relationship with a craft
2) The transformation of said relationship when changing art from hobby to profession
3)The effects and growing pains of artists (burn out, procrastination, looking for inspiration, competition and jealousy)
4)Ghibli-style environments and greenery
5) Light-hearted character dynamics and designs (DESPITE THE HEAVY TOPICS, I think the heartfelt and vivid imagery will make the story easier to digest. And in the end, growth and transformation shouldn't be scary. It's a part of life).
