The Art of Making Art (Sustained Investigation 4)

Visual Development

Whether a film or project needs visual development, sketching, concept art, or pre designs, the general idea is the same; large pieces of art require a vision before the final project is executed. Especially when the industry hires hundreds of people to accomplish a single vision, official guides are needed for consistency and clarity. Thus, a hidden and rather under-appreciated industry is formed for creating pre-concepts. These artists are the first to take the written visions into visual and tangible dreams. Because Morgana is a large collection of its own, I figured I should probably make concept art of Morgana!

The Art of.... Making Art

Looking back at my art journey, I have to say that it has been concept artists who have shaped my taste for design and rendering. Looking through art books and websites filled with exclusive behind the scenes content, these is always something about the iterations and painted keyframes that screamed raw talent and passion. Concept art visits the wild territories of what a character or place could have looked like, and its invigorating to see. The over-refinement of these ideas is also why some films are visually translated poorly.

The placement and composition of concept art sheets are also forms of art in themselves. They mix text and images, backgrounds with iconography, and even sketches with rendered pieces. Sometimes whole stories can be told just through visual development artwork.
